Overview Collapse The Graduate School of Economics plays a major role in economics education and research to train researchers who are able to work in international and cutting-edge academic research fields. The school has trained and produced numerous brilliant economists, economic experts, and many other key human resources within academic, business, and political fields. The school consists of two divisions: Division of Economics and Division of Management. Division of Economics features the following four departments: Economics, Statistics, Area Studies, and Economic History. Meanwhile, Division of Management features the following two departments: Management and Quantitative Finance. These departments provide students with a more advanced and specialized level of education. In order to promote positive interaction between theoretical investigation and empirical applications, and between studies of the present and learning from the past, the school offers a wide array of courses ranging from Advanced Microeconomics to Economic Analysis of the WTO, and from Internet and Market Science to Asian Economic History. Each department is open to one another and students are able to find their optimal mix of these diverse courses. The faculty members of the Graduate School of Economics are leaders in each of their academic fields. The school is also the center of economic research within Japan and in Asia. In addition to researchers from Asian regions, many researchers from foreign countries come and collaborate with our faculty members through joint projects, research seminars, lectures, and also international conferences. These activities are conducted with close coordination between the six centers of Graduate School of Economics: Center for International Research on the Japanese Economy (CIRJE), Center for Advanced Research in Finance (CARF), Management Education and Research Center (MERC), Center for Research and Education in Program Evaluation (CREPE), Center for Real Estate Innovation (CREI), and The University of Tokyo Market Design Center (UTMD).Top 2. (in Japanese only) Department of Economic History A fundamental fact of the social sciences is the impossibility of conducting scientific experiments. Historical analysis that evaluates the actual facts is as fundamental to social sciences as is theoretical analysis that predicts potential events. The purpose of this department is to shed light on the developmental processes of the world's economies from historical vantage points. The faculty members in this department can be classified into those specializing in the economic history of Japan and those specializing in economic history of regions outside of Japan. But they all try to be global in their perspective and relevant to contemporary issues, without, of course, losing the rigor of analyzing historical materials. ◆ Required Japanese Level Ability at least N1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test ◆ Applications Distribution/Application Period Master’s program Please visit https://www.student.e.u-tokyo.ac.jp/grad/m-nyushi-e.html for more information. (in Japanese only) Department of Quantitative Finance The Graduate School of Economics established the Finance Program in April 2005 with two main objectives: to cultivate world-class financial scholars and to create a talented group of graduates who will lead the financial world in Japan. To have a profound understanding of economic and social mechanisms, the Finance Program attaches great importance to the study of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and accounting. The study of finance covers two kinds of activities: Financial Strategy and Financial Public Policy. Financial Strategy includes asset management, development of financial products, corporate finance, risk management and other activities in the private sector. Financial Public Policy includes financial regulation, financial system design, monetary policy, currency regulation and other policy measures used by governments and central banks. Our program encompasses both themes systematically into a unique experiment. ◆ Required Japanese Level Ability at least N1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test ◆ Applications Distribution/Application Period Master’s program Please visit https://www.student.e.u-tokyo.ac.jp/grad/m-nyushi-e.html for more information.
